Welcome to the second in my set of blog posts on leadership!  Today I examine the principles behind listening.

At first glance, this is a very simple idea.  Other people speak words and they go in the ear.  Listening, right?  Well - to be an EFFECTIVE listener requires more.  The first question the good listener asks themselves is, "Do the people I want to lead feel free to give voice to their ideas, opinions, or whatever?".  If the answer is "No", or "I don't know", then clearly work needs to be done to empower the team to communicate.

HTML5 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Matt Schaefer - Web Applications Developer

In a recent article in the New York Times, Elisabeth Bumiller reports on the pervasive use of Microsoft's PowerPoint software in the US military, and the disdain it receives from top officials. Military leaders spend a large percentage of their time preparing PowerPoint slides which they believe to dumb down discourse within important decision-making processes.

There's a village in which a Zen Master and a little boy and on his 14th birthday he gets a horse...and everyone in the village says "How wonderful, the boy got a horse!", and the Zen Master says "We'll see."

Then a war breaks out and all the young men have to go off and fight...except the boy can't because his legs are all messed up and everyone in the village says "How wonderful for you!" and the Zen Master says...

The costs of professional development for employees is pretty darn easy to quantify. Travel costs, lodging, incidentals and food all get written up in an expense report when one of us goes out to a professional conference, class or workshop. But what is the benefit to the company that is footing the bill for all of this?
