The Hidden Benefits of Professional Development PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bill Covert - Graphic & Educational Design
Avatar

The costs of professional development for employees is pretty darn easy to quantify. Travel costs, lodging, incidentals and food all get written up in an expense report when one of us goes out to a professional conference, class or workshop. But what is the benefit to the company that is footing the bill for all of this?

The Importance of a Carefully Crafted E-mail PDF Print E-mail
Written by Sarah Szczerbiak - Technical Support
Avatar“When something can be read without effort, great effort has gone into its writing.” That was something that I was asked to keep in mind as I attended a webinar entitled “Email Essentials for Effective Communication” a few weeks ago. Offered online by a company who specializes in call centre-specific training courses, it offered straightforward information about how to craft an e-mail that will convey the intended message with ultimate clarity.

Move Toward Openness: the Clash Over Flash PDF Print E-mail
Written by Matt Schaefer - Web Applications Developer
Avatar

In an article on the web design site, A List Apart, author Dan Mall writes about the clash between the web design communities supporting Adobe Flash and the standard-in-development, HTML5.

Mall's primary concern about this clash is that there is too much bickering over which web technology is superior, rather than construction of a solid line of communication and collaboration between the two camps. He's right — it's about power and politics. Each side wants to gain the upper hand in influencing future rich application development on the web.

The Mighty Checklist PDF Print E-mail
Written by Katy Mullin - Director Content Development
Avatar

I have just finished reading a fascinating book called “The Checklist Manifesto” by Atul Gawande, a general and endocrine surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and leader of the World Health Organization’s Safe Surgery Saves Lives program. In this book, Gawande looks at industries including aeronautics, finance, construction, and healthcare with the aim of understanding why, with so much knowledge at their fingertips, these industries are still prone to failure. The reason, he says, is simple: the volume and complexity of knowledge today has exceeded our ability to properly deliver that knowledge to others. His solution is even simpler: use a checklist.

Here are some favorite Usability Quotes..

"Never lose sight of why software is being developed: to satisfy real needs, to solve real problems. The only way to solve real needs is to communicate with those who have the needs. The customer or users is the most important person involved with your project.

If you are a commercial developer, talk often with the clients. Keep them involved. Sure, it’s easier to develop software in a vacuum, but will the customer like the result?"

Perceptions and Reality PDF Print E-mail
Written by Sarah Szczerbiak - Technical Support
AvatarAs we move through our daily lives, we often discover that our perception of an issue has much to do with the eventual outcome of the situation. We can see this principle in action by doing something as simple as vowing to alter our mental attitudes when we're having a bad day. I find a lot of strength in the phrase "Chin up, eyes forward," to remind myself to focus on what's ahead rather than becoming bogged down over things that are in the past and cannot be changed.

Education about Money PDF Print E-mail
Written by Matt Widiger - Web Applications Developer

In high school, our (American) children learn critical skills (or not ... but that's a subject for another blog post ...) such as math, science, history, and literacy.  However, one thing that our schools do not teach is finance.  I'm not talking about high finance, or corporate finance - just basic finance that helps manage day-to-day money matters!  Consider the following:

The FOSS Alternative PDF Print E-mail
Written by Matt Schaefer - Web Applications Developer

Looking for some new snazzy software? Consider an open source alternative. If you're unfamiliar, free/open source software (FOSS) is a designation for software that is built from source code (the stuff that programmers write) that is publically available so anyone can copy, modify, and share it with others. (Of course I'm leaving out important details, but for the moment I'll spare you those. Read the Free Software Foundation's Free Software Definition for more).

E-learn or not e-learn? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Oksana Shakula - Senior Applications Developer
AvatarThere are lots of advantages and opportunities online learning can offer. A search of “online learning advantages” in Google returns 55 million results. There are disadvantages, too (and 2 million Google search results for that). So let’s talk about disadvantages – and how to make them into opportunities.
Putting myself in the shoes of a student, here are some things that I don’t like about online learning:
